First Module of HKPCB Sucessfully Completed Recently
Recently, as the first module is completed, the onshore assembling of Hong Kong Passenger Clearance Building, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has now come to critical stage, undertaken by JINGGONG STEEL.
HongKong Passenger Clearance Building of HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HKPCB) locates on a 1,300,000㎡ man-made island northeast to Hong Kong International Airport. Total steel weight is 16,000t including 1,000t casting steel. JINGGONG STEEL is in charge of shop drawing, fabrication, transportation and assembly of structural steel.
Due to the height restriction of the nearby airport, HKPCB adopted the method of pre-assembling steel structure, roofing system, equipment piping and decoration into complete module in assembling base and then ship to construction site by barge. The project consists of 45 big segments and 36 infill segments, the largest size reaches 60mx25mx17m, and weight reaches 660t. HKPCB is the first public building adopting pre-assembling technology in China.
Methods used in this project meet the requirements of EN standard, and the procedure passes HOKLAS certificate. Among the structures, the tramline and secondary beam are pre-set upwards. Single casting node weighs 14t, its fabrication and inspection are strictly controlled on EN standard, and surface treatment meets the requirement of AESS. The accuracy, quality and sampling inspection all satisfied general contractor and owner of HKPCB.
SurfaceTreatment of Casting Nodes Meet AESS
The assembling base locates on an onshore shipyard, high humidity affects coating. To ensure the quality of coating and fire-proofing, most structures are coated in a temperature-controlled and humidity-controlled workshop, and fire-proofing treatment is implied when the humidity is low on site.
To ensure assembling accuracy, JINGGONG STEEL arranged full trial assembling of the first module in workshop. The module is 60.2mx24mx12m, weighing about 280t. During the Assembling, JINGGONG combined actual assembly with 3D virtual assembly to inspect impact and errors. Connecting nodes adopted spot welding and bolted connection, and bolts fit the screw holes perfectly. The triala ssembling successfully passed the inspection of the owner, consultants and general contractor and got highly praised by contractor and project owner.
Contractor and Owner Viewing Trial Assembly
After the trial assembling, all the components were uninstalled in reversed order, then packed up and transported to onshore yard for assembling. Structures mostly adopt end connection through bolts. The matching of main segments are implied overhead, including 11 connecting nodes with full bolts connection. During assembling, segments will be connected gapless, and temporary bolts will be used between installations to ensure the accuracy.
When assembling, the installations of steel structure, roofing system, equipment piping and decoration are implied alternately, thus the arrangement of assembling ground and strict assembling procedure are needed to reduce interspersed construction and ensure the coordination and order of assembling.
Onshore Assembling includes the installation of secondary segments in the middle, prop arms, other secondary segments, the removing of temporary tower frames, matching of main segments and other rest work.

Recently, the steel structure of the first module has been successfully assembled. Soon after, it will be transported and side-rolled on board by SPMT. Modules consist of steel structure, roof system, equipment piping, etc., so the barycenter and support state change during transportation, which make controlling of synchronization and relative displacement of SPMT a key point of HKPCB.
JINGGONGSTEEL will focus on innovation and development in structural steel, and bring a brighter future to this area.
